Pregnancy is such a beautiful journey, but it can come with a lot of challenges and discomforts. One common issue many pregnant women face is sciatic nerve pain. This pain — which radiates from the lower back down through the leg — can be incredibly disruptive to daily life. But there are things that can help.

"I went through sciatic nerve pain with two of my pregnancies. It's no joke. But there are strategies to manage it — and you don't have to just white-knuckle through it."

🧠

What is sciatic nerve pain?

Sciatic nerve pain — also known as sciatica — occurs when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from your lower back, through your buttocks, and down into your legs. When this nerve is compressed or irritated, it causes pain, tingling, and discomfort that typically radiates from the lower back down one or both legs.

What causes sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy?

⚖️

Weight gain

As your pregnancy progresses, the additional weight can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.

🧬

Hormonal changes

Hormones like relaxin loosen ligaments, which can affect nerve compression in the lower back.

🤰

Uterine pressure

The growing uterus can press directly against the sciatic nerve as it expands.

👶

Baby's position

If baby's head, body, or limbs press against the nerve, it can lead to sciatic pain.

Signs and symptoms to watch for

  • Pain that radiates from the lower back down one leg (rarely both)
  • Sharp, shooting pain or a persistent dull ache
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the affected leg
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or walking

How to treat and manage sciatic nerve pain

🏃

Physical therapy

A physical therapist can provide targeted exercises and stretches to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve safely during pregnancy.

🌡️

Heat and cold therapy

Applying heat or cold packs to the affected area can provide meaningful relief during flare-ups.

🤰

Pregnancy support belt

Wearing a pregnancy support belt can help alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve and lower back throughout the day.

🧘

Rest and gentle exercise

Adequate rest combined with safe, gentle exercises like prenatal yoga or swimming can be incredibly beneficial for managing symptoms.

⚕️ While sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy is common, consult your healthcare provider if the pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms. Your provider can give you personalized guidance on treatment and management.
