Using an epidural for pain relief during labor and childbirth is one of the most common decisions expecting mamas face. There is no wrong answer — only the answer that is right for you. But before you decide, here is what I wish someone had told me, including my own very real experience.
💛 Tiffany's personal story
My third birth changed everything I thought I knew about epidurals
I have given birth to three babies and all three times I chose an epidural. For the first two I was in Germany and had no problems or complications whatsoever. But during my third birth — back stateside — I was given way too much epidural. My heart rate started dropping and I couldn't breathe. It felt like I had an elephant sitting on my chest.
It was one of the scariest moments of my life. This experience is exactly why I'm so passionate about birth education and having a strong advocate in the birth room with you.

Epidural Pros & Cons
Here is a balanced look at the advantages and disadvantages of getting an epidural during labor so you can make the most informed decision for your birth:
Advantages
Pros of an epidural
- Highly effective at relieving labor pain
- You can control the amount of medication received
- Helps you rest and conserve energy during long labors
- Reduces stress levels for a more positive experience
- Helpful when medical interventions are needed
- May increase cooperation with necessary procedures
- Can allow rest or sleep during early labor stages
Disadvantages
Cons of an epidural
- Possible side effects: shivering, itching, nausea, headaches
- Reduced sensation and mobility in the lower body
- Can cause a drop in blood pressure
- May slightly slow the pushing stage of labor
- Small risk of infection at the insertion site
- Only available in hospital settings
- Requires trained anesthesiologist — delays possible
- Not aligned with natural childbirth preferences
Making the Right Decision for You
Some women find that epidurals greatly enhance their birth experience, while others prefer alternative pain relief methods or a completely natural childbirth. Neither choice is wrong — what matters is that it's yours to make, fully informed and fully supported.
Questions to discuss with your provider
- What are my pain management options and which ones are right for my birth plan?
- Are there any risk factors that make an epidural more or less suitable for me?
- What happens if I want an epidural but the anesthesiologist isn't available?
- How will an epidural affect my ability to push and move during labor?
- What natural pain management alternatives are available to me?
- If I get an epidural, how will my vitals be monitored throughout?
This is exactly why having a doula by your side matters so much — not to make decisions for you, but to make sure you feel heard, informed, and supported in whatever decision you make. You deserve to walk into that birth room knowing your options and having someone in your corner who will advocate for you every step of the way.
